Catastrophe Response - RIG and Vericlaim in Mexico have been handling important losses in the Peninsula of Yucatan following the devastation caused by hurricane Emily on 18th July 2005.

The hurricane has seriously affected many hotels in the area and some of them have decided to close for a period of repairs. This particular category IV hurricane, differing from the usual pattern, did not cause large scale water damage and flooding, but instead we have observed that 99% of the damage was caused by the direct influence of the wind itself over extended areas of vegetation, landscaping, thatched roofs and signs. The worst affected areas were the Riviera Maya and Cozumel where communications and power supplies in some areas remain blacked out because many poles carrying the electricity lines broke. The northern region to downtown Cancun was not seriously affected and tourism is beginning to pick up again and return to normal.
